When does Halloween actually happen in downtown Sylvania this year? The 2026 calendars say Friday, October 23, from 5 to 7 in the evening. That's eight days before the 31st.
The month opened with a busy night already. The 2nd Annual Downtown Food & Drink Festival ran Friday, October 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. The Sylvania Downtown Development Authority and the Screven County Chamber of Commerce put it on together. From here to Halloween, the downtown events are set for Fridays and they're short. A good chunk of the fun comes from local businesses rather than one central stage.
The Thursday Habit Is Over Until Spring
If your summer included Thursday afternoons on Maple Street, that routine is done for the year. The City of Sylvania lists Market on Maple at 117 Maple St. on Thursdays from May through September, and it shows no October dates. That leaves Friday as the one evening downtown has planned events in October. The Food & Drink Festival on the 2nd was the first. The Fall Festival on the 23rd is the second.
Here is the week as the 2026 listings lay it out:
- Friday, October 23, 5 to 7 p.m. The Downtown Sylvania Fall Festival, free, around 104 S. Main St.
- Saturday, October 24, 5 to 8 p.m. The Hiltonia Fall Festival, free, at 2386 Waynesboro Hwy in downtown Hiltonia.
- Monday, October 26, 5 p.m. The 46th Annual Turkey Bowl at SCHS, sponsored by the Sylvania Lions Club.
- Friday, October 30, 10 to 11 a.m. The Downtown Daycare Trick or Treat, starting at First Baptist Church's Family Life Center.
Downtown's part of the week is bookended by two Fridays, one evening and one morning, with about two hours of programming on each. Other than one conflicting line on the daycare listing, which is covered below, we found no downtown event confirmed for Saturday the 31st.
Friday The 23rd: Two Hours, Built By The Storefronts
The Chamber's listing packs a lot into a short evening. It lists live music, pumpkin decorating, games, food and drinks, a free pumpkin patch, and a costume contest at 6 p.m. in front of Billie-Jo's. Entry is free. Sylvania Downtown's own event page explains how it comes together. Local businesses run the games and activities for kids, and the page lists a pumpkin decorating contest next to the costume contest. It also says the festival happens "each year."
So the festival is spread across the businesses along Main Street instead of being one booth or one stage. You'll get the most out of the evening by walking it.
The timing has a practical side for families. The costume contest is at 6, right in the middle of the window. Arrive at 5 and you have an hour for the pumpkin patch and decorating before the contest. Then there's another hour of music and games afterward. Kids who are judged at 6 aren't stuck waiting until dark.
The address details are a little confusing. The festival itself is listed at 104 S. Main St., and the Chamber's calendar record gives 101 South Main Street. Billie-Jo's Place, where the costume contest happens, is at 117 N. Main St. The evening covers Main Street from both directions, so plan to walk between the south and north blocks.
Where The Evening Goes After 7
The festival wraps up at 7, but Billie-Jo's stays open. It describes itself as a restaurant, bar and grill, and live entertainment venue under one roof in downtown Sylvania. It also lays out who can be where and when:
Space at Billie-Jo's | Who can be there |
|---|---|
Main Music Room | 21 and up after 8 p.m. during live entertainment |
Back Room and Arcade/Game Room | All ages until 10 p.m.; guests under 18 with a parent or legal guardian |
That means a family coming straight from the costume contest has an all-ages room open for three more hours after the festival ends. Billie-Jo's also mentions shakes on its food and drinks menu. Its online calendar hadn't been updated past June as of this writing, so call (912) 451-7440 for anything scheduled that night.
Saturday In Hiltonia, Monday At SCHS
The day after the Sylvania festival, the Hiltonia Fall Festival runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at 2386 Waynesboro Hwy. The Chamber lists it as free, with food, crafts, and music. It runs an hour longer than Sylvania's. For families who want two festival nights in a row, Friday on Sylvania's Main Street and Saturday in Hiltonia fill the weekend with no schedule conflict.
The Monday after brings an event that has nothing to do with costumes. The Screven County Recreation Department lists the 46th Annual Turkey Bowl at SCHS on October 26 at 5 p.m., sponsored by the Sylvania Lions Club. Forty-six years makes it the oldest event on this week's calendar by a wide margin.
Friday The 30th: The Morning Loop For The Littlest Ones
The second Friday is for a much younger group. Sylvania Downtown describes the Downtown Daycare Trick or Treat as a "popular event each year" for daycare-age and homeschooled children. Kids walk downtown and trick-or-treat at local businesses. The walk starts at the FBC Family Life Center and ends back there. The page asks that participants be under kindergarten age.
"This popular event each year is for our Daycare aged kids and homeschooled kids to come walk downtown and trick-or-treat at local businesses."
Downtown businesses carry this event too, just as they run the kids' games at the Fall Festival, only this time on a weekday morning for toddlers. The listing also includes an RSVP button.
Check the date before you go. The page's date field says October 30, 2026, 10 to 11 a.m., but the description below says "October 31st." In 2026, October 30 falls on a Friday and October 31 on a Saturday. The page doesn't say which date is correct, so confirm with Sylvania Downtown before you get the little ones dressed.
The 31st Itself Points Toward Statesboro
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. Apart from the conflicting date line on the daycare trick-or-treat page, the 2026 listings from the Chamber, Sylvania Downtown, and the City don't show a downtown Sylvania event that day. The City's pages didn't list trick-or-treat hours for the 31st when we checked. If the City announces hours later, they'll come through the City.
For a planned outing at the end of the month, the nearest options we found are in Statesboro:
- Girls in Bloom Fall Festival at Franklin's Farm, which a September 2026 Statesboro roundup lists for October 31, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a pumpkin patch, hayrides, and free admission. That listing doesn't print a year, so check with the farm before you go. The farm is at 10610 Highway 301 South.
- The Haunted Forest of Statesboro at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds, 16942 GA-67, open October 26 through 31. WSAV's roundup doesn't include hours or ticket prices.
- Bulloch County Recreation and Parks trick-or-treat, a free children's event at the Bulloch County Ag Arena, 44 Arena Blvd., on Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Franklin's Farm wraps up at 4, so a family could spend the afternoon there and still be home before dark.
Costume Pieces Close To Home
If someone still needs a costume, there's a newer stop on the west side of town. The Sylvania Times reported in August that the Helping Rock Homeless Rehabilitation Program and Thrift Store opened July 25 at 516 W. Ogeechee Street, next to Pizza Hut. It's open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and its sales support Helping Rock's rehabilitation program. Those hours come from the August report, so call before you make a special trip.
The Next Main Street Date Is Already Set
After Halloween, the next big downtown date is A Story Book Christmas Extravaganza, Saturday, December 12, from 3 to 7 p.m. The Chamber says vendor registration, sponsorships, and Light Up Parade applications are open now. Downtown businesses that want a spot in December can sign up now.
We keep an eye on Main Street's calendar because it shows what this town looks like up close. If you're wondering what homes are within walking distance of the costume contest, or what yours might be worth, Southland Realty & Properties is glad to talk it through. Search listings or get a free home valuation today, and we'll see you downtown on the 23rd.
